Pros and Cons of Dog Friendly Offices

Dogs in the Office: Joy, Chaos, or Both?

I’ve helped so many clients navigate dog-friendly offices, and it’s one of the most polarizing topics out there. People either love it or hate it.

Let’s chat about dogs in the office.

It sounds fun—who doesn’t want a golden retriever wandering by your desk? They make people happy. They lower stress. More laughs. Studies have shown that offices with pets can have higher morale and stronger social connection.

That all sounds great. Dogs get people moving—go for a quick walk, take a break, scratch a doggie behind the ears.

But let’s be honest: not everyone loves dogs.

Allergies are real. Around 10–20% of people are sensitive to pet dander. There are also religious restrictions, and some people simply don’t like dogs.

I have three dogs, and even I wouldn’t want one of mine at the office. Distractions are inevitable—barking, shedding, begging for snacks… or worse, interrupting an important client meeting.

But maybe that’s not all bad.

If you don’t plan for behavior, hygiene, and space, it can quickly become chaos instead of camaraderie.

The truth is, dog-friendly offices can work—but only if they’re intentional.

That means having clear structure and policies, designated pet-free zones for those with allergies, outdoor access, owner etiquette expectations, and making sure the building itself is set up to accommodate animals.

There’s even some great design out there now—like this product—that helps create designated dog spaces instead of letting pups roam the office like they own it (which, let’s be honest, they might anyway).

I’m Morgan, Director of Workplace at Furngully, and here’s my take:

A dog-friendly office isn’t automatically good or bad.

If it’s done well, it can bring joy, culture, and connection.

If it’s done poorly, it can create stress, distraction, and resentment.

So let’s talk about it—what do you think?

Are you pro or against dog-friendly offices?
